Cross country’s finest punch tickets to Fresno
By Eliav Appelbaum

The finish line is in sight.

After a long season, high school long-distance runners can reap the fruits of their labor this Saturday at the CIF State Cross Country Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno.

“It’s the fall classic of our sport,” said Mike Smith, the Camarillo High boys’ head coach.

The Scorpion boys won’t be alone at the state meet.

Girls’ squads at Simi Valley and La Reina will compete.

Oak Park’s Kaycee Holcomb, Sophie Mateu of Royal and Thousand Oaks’ Melanie Joerger qualified as individuals.

With star senior Heyden Wooff back in the lineup, Camarillo placed fifth at the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 boys’ finals last weekend at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut. Wooff missed the CIF-SS preliminaries with quad and groin injuries, Smith said.

Wooff had a solid practice Monday, the coach said. Smith hopes the Scorpions will step up on the sport’s biggest stage.

“I’m really happy for the kids to get a chance to be a part of this,” said Smith, in his 29th season at ACHS. “It is something that comes along really rarely. It should be a great thrill and lifetime memory for the kids.”

Camarillo’s journey started after the spring track season and into the summer. The Scorpions spent one week training in the high altitude of Mammoth and trudged through six days of running every week during the regu- lar season. This is their reward.

“This is a blast. This is the best part of the season,” the coach said. “This is the real fun part. I’ve been doing this a long, long time, and it’s still really exciting.”

Daniel Stebbings, Adam Lucero, Cole Couchman, Joel Gonzalez, Esteban Vega and Erik Pinuelas complete the potent Scorpion lineup.

Camarillo hopes to medal with a top-three finish in the Division 2 race.

The Simi Valley girls have their eyes on the ultimate prize. The Pioneers want to win a state title.

“This is quite an extraordinary team,” head coach Roger Evans said. “This team has elevated itself. As we got into the season, it wasn’t a matter of can we make it to state but can we win state.”

Leading the charge is freshman Sarah Baxter, who won the Division 1 race in 17:40, the fastest time for any girl last weekend. Baxter has never lost a high school race.

“She’s run against some bigtime talent in big races,” Evans said of Baxter. “She’s just unflappable. I knew she was going to be good. . . . I didn’t expect her to pretty much handle and dismantle all her competitors.”

Pioneer freshman Maddi Vorgitch was sent home from Monday’s practice with the stomach flu. Evans expects her to be healthy and run Saturday.

The Pioneers haven’t had the same lineup in consecutive races all season, Evans said. He was expected to make a lineup decision early this week.

Erika Barr, Amanda Miller, Chelsea Feller, Milana Maddalone, Megan McNally, Hanna Jeters and Rachel Vinas are the other Pioneers in the fold.

This is Simi Valley’s third appearance at state. The Pioneers qualified as a team and earned top-10 finishes in 2001 and 2006.

La Reina, which placed sixth at the CIF-SS Division 4 girls’ finals, will count on Jordan Jeworski, Rachel Brajkovich, Kelly Chow, Alyssa Frank, Krista Andreassen, Hayley Walke and Alex Cerise at Fresno.

Mateu, a junior at Royal, earned her way to Woodward Park after nabbing 15th in the Division 2 section finals. The Highlander completed the 3.15-mile course in 18:56.

Holcomb of Oak Park completed the Division 3 girls’ race in 18:46, good for sixth overall. The Eagle boys and girls didn’t make it out of the CIF-SS finals.

“She did a real good job of hanging with the top group,” Oak Park co-head coach Steve Kilroy said of Holcomb.

“I am definitely happy for Kaycee making it here. We’re definitely disappointed we didn’t make it, especially the girls’ team. The girls ran probably their best race of the season as a team (last weekend). We have to tip our hat to the other teams out there.”

Joerger qualified for the state meet by the skin of her teeth.

“She lucked out,” TOHS head coach Shawn Morris said.

Joerger finished in 19:05 for 20th in the Division 2 girls’ finals.

The Thousand Oaks junior edged Redondo Union’s Kayla Ferron, who was 21st and less than a second behind the Lancer.

An individual needed a top-20 finish to move on without a team.

“The big thing for her is getting some experience,” Morris said. “I’m not putting too many expectations on her. I will let her run. I don’t want to put any extra pressure on her.”
