Brian FitzGerald wasn’t sure Rio Mesa High would come out ahead in a matchup of the state’s fastest boys’ 4x100 relay teams.

Rio Mesa not only won, it produced the 12th fastest time in California high school track and field history Saturday night at the Arcadia Invitational.

The team of Jamison Jordan, LaDarrin Roach, Blake Selig and Jamaal Perkins produced a school and county record time of 40.69 seconds, which ranks second in the nation this spring. Long Beach Poly, which owned the state’s fastest time entering the meet, was second in 41.26.

“I thought that we would be in the race,” said FitzGerald, the Rio Mesa boys’ coach. “I didn’t think we’d be under 41. And by so far.”

Jonathan Cabral of Agoura was a double winner.

Cabral shattered the area’s all-time record in the boys’ 300 hurdles, winning the invitational final with a state-leading mark of 36.83. It is the third fastest time in the nation this year. Cabral also won the invitational 110 hurdles in 13.94

Niko DiMartino of Oaks Christian captured the invitational boys’ long jump at 23 feet, 914 inches.

Rio Mesa was second in the boys’ invitational 4x400 relay with a school-record time of 3:15.03, the second fastest time in Ventura County history.

Simi Valley’s Liberty Miller had a lifetime best of 10:31.05, the eighth fastest time in county history, to finish second in the girls’ invitational 3,200. Melissa Skiba of Oak Park was eighth in 10:46.59.

Sean Davidson of Royal had a county season-leading performance in the boys’ seeded 3,200 with a time of 9:09.90 to place seventh. Kevin Joerger of Thousand Oaks was 11th in 9:13.65.

Philip Hanley of Thousand Oaks matched his personal best and finished sixth in the invitational boys’ high jump by clearing 6-7. Oak Park’s Connor Stark set a school record in the invitational boys’ pole vault, placing sixth at 15-1.

After winning the open girls’ high jump with a season-best 5-7, Thousand Oaks’ Lydia French edged Rio Mesa’s Raegan Nizdil for fifth place in the invitational high jump. Both cleared 5-6. Oak Park’s Tayler Johnson was 11th at 5-4.
